Experts state that 85% of foot amputations caused by diabetes can be prevented.
Dr. Ashu Rastogi, an associate professor in the endocrinology department, explained that diabetic foot complications include ulcers and gangrene.
He mentioned that over 50% of hospitalized foot ulcer patients suffer from diabetes, which increases treatment costs by five times and often leads to lower-leg amputations.
Dr. Rastogi further highlighted that diabetic foot infections cost patients around 50% of their annual income, and each year, approximately 200,000 diabetic patients lose their feet due to the disease.
However, he emphasized that 85% of these amputations can be entirely prevented.
It is important to note that diabetes is the leading cause of leg amputations worldwide, with accidental injuries being the second most common cause.
Additionally, there is a lack of awareness among doctors and paramedical staff regarding diabetic foot complications. Addressing this issue and educating patients on foot care can significantly help in preventing these serious outcomes.
