A recent study has revealed that tiny plastic particles, which accumulate in the human body, could be responsible for the rise of lethal superbugs. According to the research, the accumulation of microplastics in the body can lead to heart disease, dementia, and various types of cancer. Plastic takes up to 500 years to decompose completely, which is why it remains in the environment and the human body. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that these plastic particles are directly linked to the increase and spread of drug-resistant infections. These superbugs (which have developed resistance to all or most powerful antibiotics) are believed to emerge due to excessive prescription of life-saving medications by doctors. According to the study, microplastics are increasing the spread of these deadly superbugs by up to 200 times.
