In northern France, a landlord has taken an unusual approach to force renters out of the house by removing doors and windows, leaving them stranded in the cold.
Like many European countries, it is illegal to evict tenants during the winter months in France, even if they have not paid rent. However, a landlord in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France has found a way to pressure his tenants to vacate the house without directly breaking the law.
A team of workers arrived at the property and began removing doors and windows under the pretext of replacing them. The tenants claim that the workers loaded the old doors and windows into a vehicle and left, leaving them exposed to the cold and at risk of theft or other accidents day and night.
Among the tenants is a mother and her son. After the incident, the mother tried to contact the landlord, but he was unreachable. The woman has since covered the windows and doors with cardboard, claiming that she is now too frightened to leave the house, spending all her time indoors.
