The Lahore district administration has taken action against establishments that failed to comply with the revised rates of bread and naan due to concerns about non-compliance with the government’s fixed prices.
The district government imposed seven heavy fines on 19 people who violated fixed tariff guidelines. Assistant Commissioner and Magistrates Price Control conducted a thorough inspection of 296 tandoors in Lahore, fined 19 owners, and issued warnings to 46 for non-compliance.
According to Deputy Commissioner Lahore, the approved rates for roti and naan are $16 for 100 grams of roti and $20 for 120 grams. Despite these regulations, there are reports of non-compliance in some parts of the bread industry.
In a meeting with Aftab Gul, the vice president of the association, he said that they have not reduced the bread rates and said that they will address their comments in the meeting.
Aftab Gul said, even though the price of bread and naan has decreased, the price remains the same. He said now it is $4,200 for a 20kg bag, compared to $2,800 previously, adding that the price reduction is not accompanied by a corresponding reduction in the cost of flour.
He also pointed out that when a loaf of bread costs $20, a 20 kg bag costs $10,000, indicating that there is no difference between price regulations and the costs faced by bakeries.
