PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a weather alert warning of strong winds, thunderstorms and rain across several districts from September 12 to September 17, with the risk of flash floods, landslides and urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
According to the PDMA advisory issued on September 11, 2026, heavy rainfall between September 14 and 17 could trigger flash floods in upper parts of the province.
The authority has identified Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra and Abbottabad as areas at risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, low-lying areas of the plains, particularly in Peshawar, Mardan and Swabi, face a potential risk of urban flooding.
Authorities told to strengthen preparedness
In view of the forecast weather conditions, PDMA has directed all district administrations to take precautionary measures and ensure preparedness for possible emergencies.
District authorities have been instructed to continuously monitor rivers, streams and rainwater channels, while relevant departments have been directed to take immediate steps to keep drainage systems clean and operational.
The authority has also directed officials to ensure the availability of rescue personnel and essential equipment so that emergency response can be carried out promptly if required.
Public urged to take precautions
PDMA has advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and exercise additional caution, particularly in mountainous areas vulnerable to landslides and flash floods.
Residents have been advised to seek safe shelter during thunderstorms and stay away from electricity transmission lines and other potentially dangerous objects.
The public has also been warned against entering or attempting to cross floodwater, as rapidly moving water can pose a serious threat to life.
24-hour monitoring
The PDMA Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is operating 24 hours a day to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant authorities.
The authority has urged residents to remain alert and follow official weather and emergency advisories.
