Larkana Seminar Calls for Stronger Action to Protect Forests and Expand Green Cover

LARKANA: A seminar on the environmental impacts of tree cutting and possible solutions was held at Indus College Larkana, where environmentalists, educators and community representatives called for stronger measures to protect forests and expand green cover in Sindh.

The seminar, titled “Impacts of Tree Harvesting on the Environment and Their Solutions,” was organised by the Green Sindh Foundation, which works on environmental protection and plantation activities in Larkana.

Speaking at the event, Green Sindh Foundation founder Zulfiqar Magsi, Dr Dayali Gul Sindho, Dr Raj Kumar, Principal of Indus School System Faiza Somro, Vice Principal Sumaira Sangi and Mohsen Reza Jilbani highlighted the environmental consequences of deforestation and uncontrolled tree cutting.

Speakers said increasing climate-related pressures, including glacier melting, landslides, flooding and changing rainfall patterns, were placing additional pressure on ecosystems. They called for stronger local strategies to protect forests and reduce the loss of green cover.

The speakers also stressed the need for action at the local level, including stronger protection of green belts along roads and canals and increased plantation around educational institutions and urban and rural settlements.

The seminar called for legislation and enforcement measures to prevent the cutting of trees and encroachment on forest land. Participants also proposed reforestation along both sides of the Indus River and measures to prevent the removal of trees in the name of housing societies and colonies.

A resolution was also passed calling for a plot to be provided to the Green Sindh Foundation for establishing a nursery to support its plantation campaign.

The foundation expressed its commitment to increasing green cover across Sindh and promoting large-scale tree planting as part of efforts to protect the environment and strengthen climate resilience.

The event concluded with a plantation activity. A Green Hero Award was also presented in recognition of horticultural services and contributions to environmental protection.

The seminar highlighted the importance of combining tree protection, reforestation, environmental education and stronger community participation to preserve Sindh’s green spaces and natural ecosystems.
