ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has asked the Supreme Court to become a party to the criminal review filed by the Punjab government against its February 6 decision in the Mubarik Ahmad Sani case.
JI chief Sirajul Haq submitted this petition to Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, a former judge of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), alleging that certain observations, directions and findings recorded in the SC order had caused “unrest, disquiet and emotion.” disorder” among the general public.
“[People] believe that their faith and religious sentiments have been harmed by the order issued by the court.”
It said there was a general perception that the court’s recent observations had departed from long-standing constitutional injunctions and jurisdictions regarding the extent of freedom of religion to be observed by members of the Ahmadi community.
Referring to a statement issued by the Supreme Court on February 22, he said the recognition of the right to redressal assistance by the court indicated that individuals who believed there had been a mistake in the interpretation of Islamic principles or legal provisions had a legitimate avenue to seek clarification or resolution .
“While the Punjab government has filed a review with a limited scope, specifically seeking amendment of paragraph 9 [of the February 6 order], the petitioner strongly believes that an in-depth analysis and a comprehensive review of the impugned order is required,” it said.
