ISLAMABAD, September 8, 2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has handed over 50 electric vehicles (EVs) to the Islamabad Police as part of efforts to modernize policing, improve public safety and promote environmentally friendly operations in the federal capital.
At a ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister handed over the keys of the electric vehicles to Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Inspector General of Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Minister of State Talal Chaudhry and other senior officials also attended the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said protecting the lives and property of citizens remained the government’s foremost priority. He said the government was providing Islamabad Police with the necessary resources to meet the requirements of modern policing.
The prime minister also appreciated Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s efforts to modernize the Islamabad Police and said the force should serve as a role model for other cities across Pakistan.
He said Islamabad Police was being equipped with modern technology, equipment and other resources to provide citizens with a safer environment.
Highlighting the environmental significance of the initiative, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the introduction of electric vehicles was aimed at promoting green policing and reducing the environmental impact of police operations.
He added that greater use of modern technology would also improve police efficiency and the quality of services provided to citizens.
During the ceremony, Inspector General Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi briefed the prime minister on the newly established Capital Patrol, a dedicated force created to strengthen security and patrolling across Islamabad.
According to the briefing, the Capital Patrol has been established in line with the prime minister’s vision of a Safe, Smart and Green Capital and will comprise a total of 200 police personnel.
Each patrol unit will include one male and one female police officer, while motorcycle-riding personnel will also form part of the force to ensure rapid response and effective patrolling in different areas of the capital.
The prime minister was further informed that Capital Patrol personnel would be equipped with body cameras, aimed at improving transparency, monitoring and accountability during policing operations.
The briefing also highlighted the deployment of the 50 electric vehicles for the Capital Patrol. The vehicles will operate entirely on electricity, reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions while lowering operational costs.
According to the briefing, the shift to electric vehicles is expected to save approximately Rs34 million per month in fuel costs. It was further stated that the cost of an individual vehicle could be recovered through fuel savings in approximately 10.5 months.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated the Islamabad Police’s efforts to incorporate modern technology, promote green policing and strengthen public safety.
He directed the relevant authorities to take all necessary measures to further enhance the effectiveness of modern policing systems in the federal capital.
The introduction of electric vehicles into Islamabad’s policing fleet marks another step towards integrating cleaner transport, digital technology and sustainable public services, supporting the broader goal of developing a safer and more environmentally responsible capital.
