ISLAMABAD: Dr. Zahid Rauf, Director of the Forest Products Research Division, and Dr. Tanvir Hussain delivered a special field lecture for BS Forestry students of the 2023–27 session on the use of tree cores in dendroclimate research.
The practical session focused on key procedures for extracting tree cores with the help of increment borers, a technique used to study growth patterns recorded in trees over time.
Students were introduced to field protocols and the importance of careful tree-core sampling for dendroclimatic studies. Tree rings can provide valuable information about past environmental and climatic conditions, including changes in temperature and moisture over long periods.
The session highlighted the connection between forest science and climate research, showing how information preserved in trees can help researchers understand historical climate patterns.
Such field-based training can also strengthen students’ understanding of sustainable forest management by linking scientific research with the long-term health and resilience of forest ecosystems.
The lecture provided BS Forestry students with practical knowledge that can support future research in forestry, climate science and environmental management.
