Forest Department Cracks Down on Illegal Timber Transportation in Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT-BALTISTAN: The Forest Department has taken action against illegal timber transportation after field staff of the Sai Forest Range apprehended a suspect allegedly involved in the unlawful movement of timber.

Acting on information received from a reliable source, forest staff conducted a night raid in the concerned area under the supervision of Foresters Ziauddin and Amirzada.

During the operation, the team reportedly caught one suspect red-handed while transporting nine timber logs without lawful authorization.

The recovered timber was immediately seized and shifted to the Pari Depot for further legal proceedings.

The accused was subsequently produced before DFO Imran Khan, who also exercised magisterial powers. Following a summary trial, the accused was sentenced to 15 days’ imprisonment and fined under the relevant forest laws.

Forest officials said the action reflects the department’s continued efforts to prevent illegal timber extraction and transportation and protect the region’s valuable forest resources.

The department has reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement against illegal timber activities and urged the public to cooperate with forest authorities in safeguarding forests and biodiversity across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Officials emphasized that protecting forest resources is essential for maintaining ecological balance, supporting local communities and strengthening the region’s resilience to climate and environmental pressures.
