Egypt is often referred to as a mysterious land, where numerous ancient secrets are continually revealed. However, scientists have discovered something in Egypt that has never been seen there in thousands of years.
They have unveiled the sighting of a hyena in southeastern Egypt, and this is the first time in 5,000 years that this animal has been observed on Egyptian soil. Abdullah Nagy, an environmental expert from Al-Zahra University in Egypt, stated, “At first, I couldn’t believe it, but then I reviewed the pictures and videos of the dead hyena’s body.”
He added, “After seeing the evidence, I was astonished; no one had ever imagined that a hyena could be discovered in Egypt.”
This creature is native to sub-Saharan Africa, but experts believe it was caught and killed by locals in the Yahmib Valley, located near the border of Egypt and Sudan. Normally, hyenas are not found hundreds of miles away from this region.
Experts speculate that this could be the result of some change in seasonal patterns, causing the hyenas to venture away from their usual hunting grounds. They believe that climatic changes in the Red Sea have led to more rainfall than usual on the Egypt-Sudan border.
As a result, plant growth has increased, altering the migration paths of animals. Analysis of old satellite images has confirmed that over the past five years, the number of plants in this region has grown, allowing predatory animals like hyenas to reach this area.
Abdullah Nagy explained that this region is not very harsh environmentally and has an easy route along the highway, which helps explain how the hyenas traveled so far north. He further added, however, that the purpose of their journey in Egypt remains a mystery, and further research is needed on this matter.
