The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has cracked down on a major smuggling network and uncovered a covert operation involving collusion between customs officers and smugglers.
The arrest of Abdulwaris in Faisalabad by FIA officials has thrown light on a long-standing nexus facilitating the illegal trafficking of petroleum products, particularly Iranian petrol and diesel, into the country.
Abdulwaris, detained by FIA Faisalabad, confessed to his involvement in smuggling activities spanning a staggering 14 years. The seizure of a vehicle linked to the accused revealed a substantial haul of 10,000 liters of smuggled Iranian diesel, underscoring the scale of the illicit trade.
Shockingly, in his confession, Abdulwaris implicated several customs officials who claimed they were involved in the smuggling enterprise. The cell phone of the accused provided incriminating evidence and revealed links with Customs Superintendent Tanveer Waqas Gurayah, Mahmood Dogar, Ramzan Shahid, Anjam, Saleem, Khalid Gujjar and others. Among the officers involved, customs officer Liaquat Wasli emerged as a central figure in organizing the network’s operations.
Liaquat Wasli’s role was crucial as he allegedly collected exorbitant amounts of money to the tune of 2.5 million rupees per person from 14 godowns of contraband.
Sources within the FIA indicated the possibility of further revelations and arrests during the investigation. The revelation of this smuggling ring underscores the challenges we face in the fight against organized crime and corruption within regulatory agencies.
