U.S. residents are still experiencing as much loneliness as they did during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A new survey, published in JAMA Open Network, reveals that more than one-third of people aged 50 to 80 across the U.S. are struggling with the distressing feeling of loneliness, and nearly as many feel disconnected from society.
The survey was conducted by a team from the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, which found that many older adults, especially those with physical or mental health issues, feel the most isolated.
Dr. Preeti Malani, the lead author of the study, stated that individual loneliness and social isolation are significant health issues.
She further emphasized that, like any other medical problem, they should receive the same level of attention.
