You’ve certainly heard of brisk walking or jogging, but have you ever heard of fart walking? Well, the latest fitness trend on TikTok is for everyone who is struggling with bloating, indigestion, gas, heartburn and other digestive issues.
Created by Toronto cookbook author Mairlyn Smith, the fart walk is exactly what it sounds like—a post-meal walk to release gas and improve digestion. After a fiber-rich meal, a brisk walk around your garden or balcony can do wonders for your health, says Smith.
In a TikTok video, the author shared that she and her husband go for a walk every evening 60 minutes after dinner. “So why do we do it? Well, we eat a lot of fiber so we get gas—everyone does—and yeah, you fart when you walk. So that’s why I named it that.”
Are you wondering if it really works or not? According to several studies and experts, walking after a meal helps the digestive system, also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, to break down food and absorb nutrients. Simply put, it’s a little exercise for your GI tract.
PRRD WALKING IMPROVES DIGESTION
BETTER INTESTINAL MOTILITY
According to the journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, walking helps move food through the digestive tract more efficiently. Studies also suggest that fart walking speeds up gastric emptying, the process of moving food from the stomach to the small intestine.
IMPROVED BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
The American Diabetes Association suggests that walking for 30 minutes each day can regulate blood sugar and help people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
FLATULENCE
The main cause of bloating is a build-up of gas, and walking on a fart can help release trapped gas. Walking also creates internal pressure in the stomach and helps with gas release.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!
Start walking about 40 to 60 minutes after eating.
Take it slow and easy. Do not go fast as this may cause discomfort.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated after your walk.
Walk for at least 20 to 30 minutes for best results.
