A recent study has found that common sleeping pills may be associated with an increased risk of dementia.
Researchers from the University of California discovered that individuals who frequently use sleep medications may have a higher risk of developing dementia.
According to the findings, the type and dosage of sleep medications play a crucial role in increasing the risk. The study also suggested that risk factors and the likelihood of the disease’s progression vary across different racial groups.
The researchers analyzed data from nearly 3,000 adults who did not have dementia at the start of the study.
Among white participants, those who regularly used sleep medications were 79% more likely to develop dementia compared to those who rarely used the medication.
In contrast, among Black participants, the frequent use of sleeping pills did not significantly increase their risk of dementia.
