Colombo: Elephants in Sri Lanka have started collecting ‘conservation money’.
In Sri Lanka, elephants are very important because of cultural and religious traditions that allow them to roam freely and often cause accidents.
Reports indicate that congregating on public roads is common for elephants. Their wickedness has increased and it has become very difficult for people to run on the road and it is almost impossible to pass without giving something.
The bravery and mischief of these elephants can be identified by the fact that they hide behind bushes along the road and suddenly appear in front of any vehicle. They do not allow vehicles to pass unless they are given food. If they get angry, they shake the car with full force and people find it safer to run for their lives.
The local government has started digging trenches near the forest to protect the settlements from elephant attacks. Other measures have been taken, but the situation remains out of control.
