Globally renowned Indian composer AR Rahman has captivated the world with his remarkable music. At the age of 23, he embraced Islam. In an interview with the Indian media in 2000, Rahman shared the reasons that led him to convert to Islam.
In the interview, Rahman explained that he turned to Islam in search of spiritual peace. A Sufi saint played a crucial role in the treatment of his father’s cancer, and the saint’s influence led Rahman to Islam. He formally accepted Islam in 1980, which brought him immense peace.
Even after converting to Islam, Rahman lived in a household where different religious beliefs coexisted. His mother followed the Hindu faith, and the house contained books and images from various religions.
AR Rahman’s birth name was Dilip Kumar Rajagopal, and he was born on January 6, 1967, in Madras (Chennai). His father, RK Shekhar, was a composer and conductor for Tamil and Malayalam films.
Regarding his name change, Rahman shared that he did not like his birth name, and his mother dreamt of the name ‘Allah Rakha.’ His family suggested ‘Rahman,’ and thus, his new name was formed.
It is worth noting that AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu are currently making headlines due to their separation after 29 years of marriage. The couple married on March 12, 1995, and they have three children.
