New research has revealed that Reiki, an ancient Japanese technique, may help cancer patients manage pain.
Reiki is an ancient Japanese practice where a practitioner either lightly touches or hovers their hands over the patient’s body, transferring energy or “ki” to the patient. A team led by Natalie Dyer from the Whole Health department at Cleveland University Hospital reported that patients receiving Reiki experienced significant improvements in all symptoms, higher levels of satisfaction, and positive healing experiences.
The team recently published these results in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management. The Cleveland Clinic, in its press release, stated that Reiki is rooted in ancient Japanese healing methods and is considered a form of healing through energy.
The word “Reiki” comes from the Japanese word “Rei,” meaning universal, and “Ki,” meaning life energy. The theory behind Reiki is that people have an invisible energy within them, and a practitioner can provide this “universal life force energy” by gently touching or hovering their hands over the patient, transferring energy for healing.
