Celina Jaitly Says Financial Independence Is A Woman’s Real Protection

Indian actress Celina Jaitly has spoken openly about marriage, compromise and women’s financial independence amid her ongoing separation and divorce proceedings with her husband, Peter Haag.

In a message shared alongside her photographs on Instagram, Jaitly questioned how many sacrifices and compromises a woman should be expected to make in the name of marriage.

The actress said that in South Asian and other societies, marriage is often viewed as a source of protection for women. However, she believes genuine security comes from education, skills, owning a home, financial independence and having the freedom to leave harmful circumstances.

Jaitly recalled that last year, when she was left without support and deprived of money and assets, concerns about her own future and the future of her children became overwhelming.

She said financial dependence had contributed to her remaining for years in what she described as an abusive marriage.

The actress also raised an important question: if women have their own homes, vehicles, savings and financial independence, how many would still feel compelled to remain in negative or abusive relationships?

According to Jaitly, many women struggle to leave toxic relationships because they lack the resources needed to establish a safe life for themselves and their children.

She stressed that every woman should have the right to become financially independent through education, professional skills, employment and personal savings.

Jaitly further said women should not have to worry about basic necessities such as housing, safety and food for their children before deciding whether to leave a relationship.

Celina Jaitly married Peter Haag in 2010. The couple welcomed twins in 2012 and another set of twins in 2017. Their divorce proceedings are ongoing, with Haag reportedly filing for divorce in an Austrian court last year.
