HARIPUR: The Department of Environmental Sciences at The University of Haripur has held an orientation session for newly enrolled students, highlighting the importance of environmental education, scientific research and sustainable practices in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
The session was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sajid Rashid Ahmad, Registrar Riaz Muhammad and other university officials. Welcoming the new students, the vice chancellor emphasized the growing importance of environmental sciences in understanding and responding to challenges such as climate change, pollution and the depletion of natural resources.
He encouraged students to build a strong academic foundation and contribute to environmental protection through research, scientific knowledge and responsible environmental practices. He also highlighted the role of universities in preparing young people to address emerging environmental issues and support sustainable development.
Dr. Azhar Rashid, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Sciences, introduced students to the department’s academic programmes, research activities and learning opportunities. He discussed the expanding relevance of environmental sciences in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, pollution control and sustainable resource management.
Dr. Rashid also outlined departmental expectations and stressed the importance of active participation in academic activities and research. He encouraged students to make effective use of the opportunities available to develop their knowledge and practical understanding of environmental issues.
Dr. Zia ur Rahman, Assistant Professor and Academic Advisor, briefed students on the university’s vision and mission, academic framework, and semester rules and regulations. His briefing helped familiarise newly enrolled students with the academic requirements and institutional structure they will encounter during their studies.
The orientation also introduced students to the diverse career and research pathways available in environmental sciences. These include areas such as environmental monitoring, climate change research, conservation, pollution management and sustainable development.
As climate change and environmental degradation increasingly demand evidence-based solutions, environmental education can help equip future professionals with the skills needed to assess risks, support conservation efforts and develop sustainable approaches to resource management.
