Community-Led Road Rehabilitation Strengthens Climate Resilience in Mirpurkhas

MIRPURKHAS: A community-led road rehabilitation project in Chango Khan Jarwar, Union Council Mir Allah Bachayo, is improving connectivity and strengthening climate resilience for local communities in Mirpurkhas.

The intervention is part of the project “Empowering Local Stakeholders and Communities for Diversified and Sustainable Livelihoods, and Protection against Climate Risks for Vulnerable Communities in District Mirpurkhas.” The project is supported by Malteser International and BMZ and implemented by the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO).

The 300-running-foot rehabilitation scheme is benefiting around 209 community members, particularly people from the Kohli Jarwar and Lagari communities.

The area had faced long-standing access problems, especially during rainy weather when water, mud and uneven ground made travelling difficult.

The community identified the issue through the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) process and prioritised the intervention through the Joint Development Committee (JDC).

The rehabilitated route is providing safer and easier travel, particularly for women and children, while improving access to UC Ahori, Taluka Hospital Jhuddo and the wider road network.

The improved connectivity is also helping farmers move agricultural inputs and produce more easily. It is expected to reduce transport difficulties and vehicle wear and tear while providing more reliable access during adverse weather.

The intervention highlights how small, community-driven infrastructure projects can improve rural mobility, support livelihoods and strengthen the ability of vulnerable communities to cope with climate-related challenges.
