Fruit Tree Programme Supports 100 Families and Greener Communities

KAHATAGASDIGILIYA/KEKIRAWA: A fruit tree distribution programme has provided 500 fruit trees to 100 families in Kahatagasdigiliya and Kekirawa, supporting household food resources while promoting greener communities.

Under the programme, each participating family received three mango trees and two guava trees.

The initiative aims to encourage families to grow fruit trees at household level, helping improve access to locally grown food while increasing tree cover in communities.

The programme is also linked with Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on Land, which focuses on protecting ecosystems, promoting sustainable land use, conserving biodiversity and supporting ecosystem restoration.

Community-based tree planting can provide benefits beyond individual households. Fruit trees can contribute to greener surroundings, support local biodiversity and strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

By involving families directly in tree planting and care, the programme encourages long-term responsibility for trees and natural resources.

The initiative demonstrates how small-scale community actions can contribute to food security, environmental conservation and more resilient communities.
