CHAKWAL: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Chakwal has sealed an OGDCL Rajian-01 well and imposed a Rs500,000 fine following an inspection prompted by a report received through social media.
Acting on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Chakwal Sarah Hayat, Deputy Director EPA Chakwal Anza Niazi, along with an EPA inspector and other staff, immediately inspected the OGDCL Rajian-01 well after receiving information regarding an environmental incident.
During the inspection, officials found that the well’s wastewater pit had overflowed, resulting in oil-contaminated water escaping beyond the site boundary. An incident involving fire at the affected area was also reported.
The EPA team took immediate action and arranged a water bowser to reach the site. The fire was subsequently extinguished completely and the situation was brought under control.
Following the inspection, the Rajian-01 well was sealed over environmental regulatory violations, while a Rs500,000 penalty was imposed on the operator.
The district administration said strict action would continue against activities that cause environmental pollution or violate applicable environmental regulations.
Officials reiterated that industrial and oil-related facilities are required to comply with environmental safeguards and ensure proper management of wastewater and potentially hazardous materials.
The action also highlights the role of timely public reporting and digital platforms in helping environmental authorities identify potential pollution incidents and respond promptly.
The district administration said environmental protection would remain a priority and that enforcement measures would be taken without discrimination against entities found violating environmental laws.
