A 5-month-old baby girl arriving from Qatar on a flight at Peshawar Airport has tested positive for monkeypox, marking the second case reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year.
According to Health Advisor Ihtisham Ali, the Department of Health identified the second monkeypox case at Bacha Khan International Airport.
Since 2022, 11 monkeypox cases have been reported in the province. The Public Health Reference Lab confirmed the virus in the 5-month-old child, who arrived in Pakistan with her parents from Qatar at Peshawar Airport.
After confirming the virus in the child, health authorities collected samples from the parents for testing, which have been sent to the lab for diagnosis.
Previously, last week, a 35-year-old man arriving from Dubai also tested positive for monkeypox. Seven cases of monkeypox were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2024.
