As remote work becomes more common, many professionals are trying to explore the world while maintaining their careers.
Spain tops the list as the best European country for digital nomads, having launched its Digital Nomad Visa program in early 2023. Applicants must meet several criteria to obtain this visa:
Being a non-European citizen.
No criminal record in Spain or any other country in the last five years.
Have health insurance that covers Spain.
Provide proof of qualifications such as a university degree or relevant work experience.
Demonstrate a professional relationship with a foreign company for at least three months (for self-employed persons).
Show sufficient funds to support their stay with a minimum monthly income of $2,750. If you bring a family, the required income increases to $3,750 per month.
Spain is followed by the Netherlands, with Norway, Estonia and Romania making up the top five. Taiwan and Malaysia are the only Asian countries in the top 15, ranked 12th and 15th respectively.
The report highlights that digital nomad visa programs are particularly beneficial for citizens of countries with weaker passports, as they make it easier for them to obtain permanent residency elsewhere.
