In 1951, Abdul Sattar Edhi established his first pharmacy, marking the beginning of what became a lifelong mission of service.
With just Rs 5,000, he started the first welfare center and subsequently the Edhi Trust. His work went beyond supporting needy children; he offered a compassionate hand to orphans and the poor, embodying the very essence of humanism.
Known for its vast volunteer network, Edhi Foundation has reached beyond the borders of Pakistan and is helping suffering humanity across the globe. Under Faisal Edhi’s leadership, the foundation continues to uphold Abdul Sattar Edhi’s legacy of selfless service.
In recognition of his unique contribution, the Government of Pakistan awarded Abdul Sattar Edhi a shield of honor in 1980. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) also released a commemorative coin of 50 rupees in his honour.
On July 8, 2016, Abdul Sattar Edhi died at the age of 88. His death marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on. Edhi was buried with official honors at the local graveyard in Karachi, leaving the world forever touched by his boundless compassion and selflessness.
