A new study has warned that Yo-Yo dieting—a term used for repeated cycles of weight loss and regain—can significantly increase the risk of kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes.
Diabetic patients who experience frequent weight fluctuations see a 40% reduction in their kidneys’ ability to filter toxic substances from the blood.
Researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism that repeated changes in body weight are linked to an increased risk of kidney disease in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Marion Quéméneur, the lead researcher from the University Hospital Center Bordeaux, France, stated in a news release that this is the first study to establish this association.
The study also revealed that nearly 35% of men and 55% of women who follow Yo-Yo dieting patterns face an increased risk of heart disease, regardless of whether they have diabetes or not.
