A famous name in Urdu literature, Munawwar Rana died of cardiac arrest at the age of 71 in Lucknow on Sunday, according to his family, after suffering from multiple health problems along with throat cancer.
His family told the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Sunday that he breathed his last at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
His daughter Sumaiya Rana told PTI that her father will be laid to rest on Monday.
He is survived by his wife, four daughters and a son.
Munawwar Rana’s son Tabrez Rana was quoted in a PTI report as saying, “He was hospitalized for 14 to 15 days due to illness. He was first admitted to Medanta in Lucknow and then SGPGI where he breathed his last around 11 pm today.”
Earlier, Munawwar Rana was battling kidney and heart ailments.
Munawwar Rana was born on 26 November 1952 in Uttar Pradesh.

The 71-year-old was known for his contributions to Urdu literature and poetry. His poetry was recognized as accessible as he also used Hindi and Awadhi words in his writing.
There was a famous poem ‘Maa’ in his work.
He has also won numerous titles during his journey as a successful poet, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his book ‘Shahdaba’.
However, the award was returned due to rising extremism and religious intolerance in India. His other accolades include Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award and Saraswati Samaj Award
