Heavy Rain Forecast in Parts of Thailand, Flash Flood Warning Issued

BANGKOK: Heavy rain is forecast across parts of northern, upper northeastern, eastern and southern Thailand on August 17, with authorities warning residents of possible flash floods, forest runoff and river overflows.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, isolated heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the North, upper Northeast, East and along the western coast of the South during the next 24 hours.

The weather system is being influenced by a monsoon trough extending from Myanmar across northern Thailand and Laos towards a low-pressure cell over upper Vietnam. A relatively strong southwesterly monsoon is also prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Authorities have urged communities in vulnerable areas to remain alert for sudden flooding and runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways.

Meanwhile, strong winds and rough seas are expected in the upper Andaman Sea, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres and potentially exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms.

Vessels operating in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand have been advised to exercise caution and avoid areas experiencing thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been advised to remain ashore until conditions improve.
