KARACHI, September 14, 2026: The Sindh government and Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have been appreciated for taking action against illegal and substandard tyre pyrolysis plants operating in the province.
The closure of several units in Keamari and Malir sends a clear message that environmental laws, emission standards and public health cannot be compromised.
Tyre pyrolysis involves heating waste tyres at high temperatures with limited oxygen to produce oil, carbon black, steel and gas. The process can support better management of waste tyres when carried out under proper environmental controls. However, poorly managed plants can create serious risks for air, soil, water and public health.
Without proper emission control and filtration systems, such plants can release harmful smoke, fine particles, volatile organic compounds, unpleasant odours and other pollutants into the environment.
Such pollution can affect workers and nearby communities and may contribute to breathing problems, eye and throat irritation, asthma and other respiratory concerns.
Waste oil, ash and chemical residues can also become environmental hazards if they are not safely collected, treated and disposed of. Improper waste management can pollute soil, surface water and groundwater.
Strong environmental enforcement is therefore important to ensure that industrial units follow legal requirements, use appropriate pollution-control technology and manage their waste safely.
