YJA and Riphah University hosts seminar on cyber security, AI and digital journalism

Riphah University and Young Journalists Association host seminar on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital journalism in Rawalpindi.

Rawalpindi, June 19: Riphah International University and Young Journalists Association on Thursday hosted an awareness seminar focusing on cyber security, artificial intelligence and digital journalism, bringing together academics, journalists, media practitioners and students from across the city.
The seminar, jointly organised by Riphah FM Radio Station, ORIC and the Young Journalists Association, aimed to highlight emerging technological challenges and prepare young journalists for the evolving digital media landscape.
Speakers at the event underscored the increasing importance of cyber security awareness in an era marked by rising digital threats and rapid technological transformation.
Cyber security expert Saeed Najeeb-ul-Hassan, speaking on “How to Prevent Yourself from Cybercrime,” warned that cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated. He advised users to adopt stronger password practices, enable two-factor authentication and avoid sharing sensitive personal data on unverified platforms.
Professor Dr Hafeez-ur-Rehman, in his address titled “Hack the Hacker: Cyber Hygiene for All,” stressed that digital hygiene has become a basic necessity in modern life. He said responsible use of mobile devices, computers and social media platforms can significantly reduce exposure to cyber risks.
Senior journalist Aamir Saeed Abbasi highlighted shifting media trends and the growing influence of digital platforms in news dissemination.
PTV News anchor Mahwar Qureshi, speaking on “Digital Journalism and Challenges,” said digital media had improved access to information but also amplified concerns around misinformation, fact-checking and journalistic ethics.
Assistant Professor Dr Rashid Ammar, in a session on AI literacy, said artificial intelligence is now reshaping multiple sectors including education, healthcare, business and media, adding that basic understanding of AI has become essential across professions.
Dr Zubair, in two separate addresses, discussed the role of AI, cybersecurity and journalism in building public trust in the digital age and stressed the importance of safeguarding society against misinformation in AI-driven environments.
Representatives of the Young Journalists Association, including President Muhammad Yousaf Khan, Chairman Malik Zubair Awan and Secretary Coordination Anila Bashir, also attended the seminar along with other members.
Speakers from the association said the initiative aimed to provide training, guidance and professional exposure to emerging journalists, enabling them to adapt to rapidly changing media requirements.
Riphah FM Radio Station in-charge Irfan Bhatti said collaboration between media institutions and academia was essential to equip young people with modern digital skills and responsible media practices.
At the conclusion of the seminar, shields were presented to speakers in recognition of their contributions, while certificates were distributed among participants. Organisers said such initiatives would continue to promote responsible journalism, cyber awareness and constructive use of emerging technologies.
