Pakistan Recognised with Sustainable Sovereign Panda Bond Award

ISLAMABAD, September 16, 2026: Pakistan has received international recognition at the 2026 APAC Climate Bonds Awards for its inaugural Sustainable Development Panda Bond, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to diversify financing for sustainable development.

Pakistan received the Pioneer Sustainable Sovereign Panda Bond Issuer Award for its CNY 1.75 billion Sustainable Development Panda Bond issued in May 2026.

The three-year bond carries a 2.5 percent coupon and attracted demand of more than five times the amount offered, according to the information released about the transaction.

The bond has also opened access to a new pool of institutional investors in the Chinese capital market, helping diversify Pakistan’s sovereign financing sources and strengthen financial links between Pakistan and China.

The transaction was carried out through cooperation between the Government of Pakistan, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Chinese authorities, financial advisers, underwriters and other market participants.

Proceeds from the bond are intended to support green and socially inclusive investments in areas including water, energy and healthcare.

The recognition highlights the growing role of sustainable finance in mobilising capital for development and climate-related priorities. For Pakistan, expanding access to different sources of international financing can provide additional opportunities to support investments in sectors that are important for climate resilience and sustainable development.

The Panda Bond also represents an effort to broaden Pakistan’s international investor base and develop stronger links with Asian financial markets.

The award comes as Pakistan continues to face significant climate and development challenges, including water stress, extreme weather and pressure on essential infrastructure, making investment in resilient and sustainable sectors increasingly important.
