Pakistan potato exports steady at 248,000 tons in H1 FY26 amid stable global demand

ISLAMABAD, May 4 — Pakistan potato exports remained stable at around 248,000 tons during the first half of fiscal year 2025–26, reflecting consistent demand in key international markets and steady supply conditions. Official data shows the exports generated approximately $56 million between July and January.

The stable export volumes are significant for farmers and exporters, as potatoes remain a key agricultural commodity contributing to foreign exchange earnings and rural incomes. The figures indicate continuity in trade despite shifting global market conditions.

Key export destinations

The United Arab Emirates remained the largest importer of Pakistani potatoes during the period, followed by Sri Lanka. Afghanistan continued as a major regional buyer, importing more than 29,000 tons.

Other Gulf markets, including Qatar and Oman, sustained regular demand, while smaller markets such as Somalia imported limited quantities, pointing to gradual diversification of export destinations.

Importance for the agriculture sector

Potatoes are among Pakistan’s leading vegetable exports, supporting farm incomes and trade activity. Stable exports help absorb surplus production and maintain price balance in domestic markets.

Export performance is also closely linked to compliance with phytosanitary standards set by importing countries, which determine market access and continuity of trade.

Market access and recent developments

A key development during the period was the reopening of the Russian market. Russia had imposed phytosanitary restrictions on Pakistani potatoes in May 2025, which have now been lifted following regulatory measures by the National Plant Protection Organization.

Initially, three Pakistani companies have been approved to resume exports to Russia, with efforts underway to expand participation.

Production and export potential

Pakistan is witnessing a rise in potato production, with current output estimated at around 12 million metric tonnes, up from 8.7 million tonnes a year earlier. The increase has created a surplus of approximately 4 to 4.5 million tonnes.

Historically, annual potato exports range between 500,000 and 600,000 tonnes, indicating potential for higher shipments if market access expands and demand remains stable.

Outlook

Export performance in the remaining months of FY26 will depend on access to additional markets, expansion of approved exporters, and effective management of surplus production.

Recent trends show fluctuations in export volumes, with strong performance in FY2022–23, a decline in FY2023–24, and recovery in FY2024–25. Current data suggests the sector is maintaining stability with potential for gradual growth.
