Pakistan’s Landmark Panda Bond Wins Global Climate Finance Award

ISLAMABAD, September 16, 2026: Pakistan has received international recognition for its first-ever Sustainable Development Panda Bond, winning the Pioneer Sustainable Sovereign Panda Bond Issuer Award at the 2026 APAC Climate Bonds Awards.

The recognition highlights Pakistan’s growing role in sustainable finance and its efforts to mobilize international investment for climate-resilient and environmentally responsible development.

Issued in May 2026, the three-year Panda Bond raised CNY 1.75 billion and attracted strong interest from investors, with demand exceeding five times the offered amount. The bond was priced at a competitive 2.5 percent coupon rate, opening access to a new pool of institutional capital and strengthening financial cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Proceeds from the bond are expected to support green and socially inclusive projects, particularly in water, clean energy, health and sustainable infrastructure sectors. The initiative reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to secure climate finance and diversify funding sources for development priorities.

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb thanked the Climate Bonds Initiative, the Government of China, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), investors, advisers and financial partners for their role in the successful transaction.

He said the award represents more than a financial achievement, as it demonstrates Pakistan’s increasing access to global climate finance and international partnerships that can support sustainable economic growth.

The recognition comes at a time when developing countries, including Pakistan, are seeking innovative financing mechanisms to address climate challenges, strengthen resilience and invest in green development pathways.

Pakistan’s successful entry into the Panda Bond market is being viewed as an important step toward attracting investment for climate action, sustainable infrastructure and long-term environmental resilience
