Islamabad: “In line with Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to remove cultural and economic barriers to women’s independence, the National Vocational and Technical Education Commission (NAVTTC) is launching ‘She Fixes, #theekkardungi),’ a pioneering initiative for development skills for women across Pakistan.
“Theek kar dungi” aims to empower 500 women by offering affordable vocational training in traditionally male-dominated fields. Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, Chairperson of NAVTTC, states: “This initiative is a catalyst for gender equality, promoting self-reliance and independence. Starting with repairing household appliances, it extends to empowering women to address wider societal issues.”
In line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5, 8 and 10, ‘Theek Kar Dungi’ directly contributes to gender equality, economic growth and reducing inequalities among women. This inclusive, women-only program is designed to equip Pakistani women with essential vocational skills, particularly in the field of plumbing and electrical work. The pilot program is open to women from all social segments, whether they are housewives or students, and provides an opportunity for personal and professional growth. It allows participants to independently solve everyday household problems, thereby reducing dependence on male family members.
“She Fixes” (a pilot program) will initially be launched in nine cities: Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Mirpur, Gilgit, Skardu and Hunza. Enrollment begins on March 11, 2024 through the NAVTTC website, with classes starting from May 1, depending on women’s response and feedback to this transformative initiative.
Gulmina Bilal Ahmad emphasizes: “Our aim is to change the lives of women by providing them with practical skills. The pilot program is a crucial step and we expect the positive impact it will have on women in these cities. Eligible women, regardless of their roles as housewives or students are encouraged to apply and seize this opportunity for personal and professional growth.”
