A Maryland boy is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a shark during a shark tank expedition at a resort in the Bahamas on Monday, Fox News reported.
A 10-year-old boy’s vacation turned into a nightmare after he was attacked by a shark at about 4 p.m. EST on Paradise Island while the boy was “participating in a shark tank expedition at a local resort,” according to a statement. Royal Bahamas Police Force.
According to preliminary reports, the young explorer was bitten on the right leg as a result of the dangerous attack and was taken to hospital, where he is currently in a stable condition.
Maryland police did not identify the boy and said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The 10-year-old shark attack comes just a month after a Massachusetts woman was killed while vacationing in the Bahamas.
Earlier, 44-year-old Lauren Erickson Van Wart was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark while paddleboarding with a relative less than a mile off the west end of New Providence Island.
According to Gavin Naylor, program director of the International Shark Attack File in Florida, there are 30 to 40 species of sharks living around the Bahamas. However, the Caribbean reef shark, bull shark, tiger shark and black tip shark have the highest bite rates.
“It’s usually an accidental bite. They think it’s something else,” he said. “Every once in a while they actually choose people, and it’s very intentional.”
