LAHORE: A 37-year-old man died while swimming at the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Sports Complex, prompting questions over safety measures and supervision at the facility.
The incident occurred two days ago at the swimming pool of the EME Sports Complex, which is managed by the LDA Sports Complex Directorate.
The deceased, identified as Muhammad Aqdas, reportedly died while swimming. Initial reports alleged that he drowned and claimed the on-duty lifeguard failed to rescue him in time, raising concerns over possible negligence.
However, the Sports Complex Directorate disputed the claims, maintaining that Aqdas suffered a heart attack while swimming and did not drown.
The incident has also brought the management of the Sports Complex Directorate under scrutiny, with reports alleging inadequate monitoring and supervision contributed to the tragedy. It has further been claimed that details of the incident were withheld from the public for two days.
Following the incident, Director Sports Complex Khurram Yaqoob reportedly applied for leave. Media reports also suggest that the Lahore Development Authority is considering removing him from his position over concerns regarding his handling of the incident.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, including whether safety protocols, emergency response procedures and lifeguard arrangements at the facility met the required standards.
