Lahore DC reviews flood preparedness, orders round-the-clock monitoring of River Ravi

LAHORE: Deputy Commissioner Lahore Muhammad Ali Ejaz on Monday reviewed monsoon preparedness in Ravi Tehsil and directed all relevant departments to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the River Ravi and remain fully prepared to respond to any flood emergency.

During a visit to Bund Road in Shahdara Town, the deputy commissioner was accompanied by CEO Metropolitan Corporation Lahore Kaleem Yousaf, Assistant Commissioner Ravi Humaira Shah, officials from the Irrigation Department and other concerned agencies.

Officials from the Irrigation Department briefed the DC on the current flood situation and ongoing preparedness measures. They informed him that contingency plans had been completed and all necessary arrangements were in place to deal with potential flooding during the monsoon season.

Muhammad Ali Ejaz instructed officials to continuously monitor river water levels, keep relief camps operational and ensure that emergency staff and machinery remain on standby. He also directed the Irrigation Department, Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to enhance coordination for an effective and timely response.

He said protecting the lives and property of citizens remained the district administration’s top priority, adding that all available resources would be mobilised to handle any flood-like situation. He warned that negligence in emergency preparedness would not be tolerated.

The deputy commissioner also directed authorities to maintain 24-hour surveillance of protective embankments to minimise flood risks during the ongoing monsoon season.

Later, he inspected the desilting operation at Baradari Road in Begum Kot and instructed officials to complete the cleaning of all drains before heavy rains. He also ordered regular inspections of the sewerage system and directed that pumping stations in low-lying areas remain fully operational to prevent urban flooding and ensure efficient drainage during the monsoon.
