PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is preparing to launch an electric bike scheme for women, with college and university students and employed women eligible to receive the environmentally friendly vehicles on a merit-based basis.
Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi announced the initiative while addressing the 57th meeting of the provincial cabinet, saying eligible women across the province would be provided electric bikes strictly on merit.
The first phase of the Electric Vehicle (EV) Bike Scheme is expected to be launched soon. However, the provincial government has not yet announced the total number of bikes to be distributed, detailed eligibility criteria, application process or exact launch date.
The chief minister said the electric bike programme would be followed by an electric rickshaw scheme, describing the planned initiatives as steps towards cleaner transportation and reducing environmental pollution across the province.
He also directed the relevant authorities to accelerate work on an electric bus scheme for divisional headquarters throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The planned initiatives form part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to expand electric mobility and promote sustainable transportation while providing women with additional and potentially more affordable mobility options.
A greater shift towards electric vehicles could also help reduce transport-related emissions and improve air quality, particularly in urban areas.
The initiatives are expected to support Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable transport system as the province expands its electric mobility infrastructure.
