PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is set to launch an electric bike scheme for women, with college and university students as well as employed women eligible to receive the environmentally friendly vehicles.
Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi announced the initiative while addressing the 57th meeting of the provincial cabinet, stating that eligible women across the province would be provided electric bikes strictly on a merit-based basis.
The first phase of the EV Bike Scheme is expected to be launched soon. However, the government has yet to announce the total number of electric bikes to be distributed, detailed eligibility criteria, application procedure or the exact launch date.
The chief minister said the electric bike initiative would subsequently be followed by an electric rickshaw scheme, describing the planned programme as an important step towards promoting cleaner and greener transportation and reducing environmental pollution in the province.
He also directed the relevant authorities to accelerate work on an electric bus scheme for divisional headquarters across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The initiatives are part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to expand electric mobility, promote sustainable transportation and provide women with additional and potentially more affordable transport options.
The shift towards electric vehicles could also contribute to reducing emissions and improving air quality, particularly in urban areas, while supporting the province’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
