ISLAMABAD: Dr. Samrana Afzal, Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), participated in an international roundtable and technical dialogue focused on unlocking agricultural carbon markets and advancing climate-smart solutions for a resilient future.
The dialogue, titled “Unlocking Agricultural Carbon Markets: Climate-Smart Solutions for a Resilient Future,” was held at the COMSTECH Secretariat, Islamabad. Dr. Samrana Afzal attended the event alongside two FJWU students, providing them an opportunity to engage with experts, policymakers and other stakeholders working on climate and sustainable agriculture.
The discussions focused on the potential of agricultural carbon markets, climate-smart agriculture and sustainable development, with particular attention to opportunities available to Pakistan’s agriculture sector.
Participants examined agricultural initiatives involving key crops, including rice and cotton, and discussed emerging opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which provides frameworks for international cooperation in achieving climate goals.
The dialogue highlighted how Pakistan’s agriculture sector can play a greater role in climate action while simultaneously supporting sustainable livelihoods, food security and long-term economic development.
For the participating students, the event provided valuable exposure to emerging climate finance mechanisms and the growing connection between agriculture, carbon markets and climate resilience.
Dr. Samrana Afzal’s participation also reflects FJWU’s efforts to promote academic engagement with national and international policy discussions on climate change and sustainable development.
The roundtable served as a platform for knowledge exchange, networking and exploration of potential partnerships, contributing to broader efforts to build capacity and strengthen collaboration for a climate-resilient and sustainable future.
