ECP sends list of parties’ electoral symbols to ROs sans PTI

ISLAMABAD: With less than a month left for the general elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sent the details of election symbols of political parties to returning officers (ROs), The News reported on Wednesday.

In this context, the electoral authority sent a letter to the RO of the national and regional councils along with a list of election symbols of 145 political parties as a matter of priority.

In its letter, the ECP emphasizes that only the candidates nominated by the political parties should be allotted the respective election symbols.

Returning officers were told that no independent candidate should be given election symbols of political parties.

To this end, the ECP has also sent a list of separate election symbols for independent candidates and directed the returning officers not to allot symbols to candidates other than those mentioned in the list.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is among more than a dozen political parties that were not included in the list of election symbols as its iconic “bat” symbol was removed due to non-holding of internal party elections. — a legal requirement to obtain an election symbol.

Parties assigned symbols include Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPs assigned “arrow”, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) “sword”, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz “tiger”, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Nazriyati (PTI-N) “batsman”.

In addition, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI-P) Members of Parliament were given a “turban”, Istehkam-e-Pakistan (IPP) party was given an “eagle”, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) was given a “kite”, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-P) “book”, Balochistan National Party (BNP) “axe”, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) “scale”, Sunni Ittehad Council “horse”, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) the “human eye”, the “tractor” of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and the “tree of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party”.
