China Eyes Pakistan Livestock Investment To Boost Food Security

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the livestock sector, with a focus on expanding Pakistan’s halal meat exports and attracting Chinese investment in modern meat processing infrastructure.

The understanding was reached during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and a Chinese delegation in Islamabad.

Welcoming the delegation, the minister said Pakistan offers significant investment opportunities in the livestock sector due to its large animal population, strategic location, and growing capacity to produce high-quality halal meat. He noted that livestock is a key component of Pakistan’s agricultural economy, contributing substantially to rural livelihoods, agricultural value addition, and the national GDP.

Rana Tanveer Hussain said China, as one of the world’s largest meat importers, provides a major export market for Pakistan. He invited Chinese companies to invest in state-of-the-art slaughterhouses and modern meat processing facilities equipped with advanced technology, international hygiene standards, cold-chain infrastructure, and traceability systems.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating foreign investment through investor-friendly policies, institutional support, and improved coordination. He said modernising Pakistan’s meat processing industry would enhance exports, create employment opportunities, improve food safety standards, increase value addition, and raise farmers’ incomes.

The Chinese delegation appreciated Pakistan’s livestock potential and expressed strong interest in collaborating on meat processing, technology transfer, quality assurance, and export-oriented infrastructure.

Both sides agreed to strengthen technical cooperation, encourage business-to-business partnerships, and work together to address regulatory and sanitary requirements for increasing Pakistan’s meat exports to the Chinese market.

Concluding the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain reiterated the government’s resolve to transform Pakistan’s livestock industry into a globally competitive sector, expressing confidence that deeper Pakistan-China cooperation would enhance food security, promote sustainable agricultural growth, and further strengthen the longstanding strategic partnership between the two countries.
