Nankana Sahib: Baba Guru Nanak University (BGNU) hosted the 3rd National Bamboo Conference 2026, bringing together academics, researchers, students and environmental activists to discuss the role of bamboo in sustainable development, climate resilience and the circular economy.
The conference was organised by the Department of Botany at BGNU in collaboration with the Agri Tourism Development Corporation of Pakistan, Rana Safari and Luxury Resort, and Ideal College Sheikhupura.
Held under the theme “Green Gold for Circular Economy: Role of Bamboo in Sustainability, Climate Resilience & Eco-Friendly Products,” the conference focused on bamboo as a sustainable natural resource and its potential to support environmentally friendly products and greener economic activities.
The opening sessions featured BGNU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Imran, Registrar Mubashar Tariq, Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology Prof. Dr. Kafeel Ahmad, Dr. Ayesha Shoukat, CEO Rana Safari and Luxury Resort, Tariq Tanvir, CEO Agri Tourism Development Corporation of Pakistan, and Engr. Muhammad Imtiaz Asad, CEO Ideal College Sheikhupura.
Dr. Ulkar Ibraimova from the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry, Ministry of Agriculture, Baku, Azerbaijan, Prof. Dr. Shahzad Maqsood Basra of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, and Prof. Dr. Zaheer-Ud-Din Khan (R), Distinguished Professor of Botany and Plant Sciences at GCU Lahore, also participated as keynote speakers.
The first day brought together faculty members, students, researchers, environmental activists and Shajar Dost, recognised as “Green Heroes,” for discussions on bamboo cultivation, sustainable resource use and environmental protection.
Participants discussed how bamboo can contribute to climate resilience, support greener communities and provide raw material for eco-friendly products. The conference also provided an opportunity for academic and professional exchange on sustainable resource management and the circular economy.
The event highlighted the potential of bamboo as a nature-based resource that can support environmental sustainability while creating opportunities for greener production and responsible use of natural resources.
