Rare Sperm Whale Spotted Off Karachi Coast

A rare sperm whale, measuring approximately 45 feet in length, has been spotted in the Arabian Sea around 40 nautical miles southwest of Karachi.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), this is the first recorded sighting of a sperm whale in the coastal waters of Sindh.

WWF technical adviser Moazzam Khan said sperm whales had previously been recorded near the Balochistan coast, but their presence in Sindh’s waters had not been documented before.

Khan added that 26 species of whales and dolphins have so far been recorded in Pakistan’s marine waters.

He warned that marine pollution, entanglement in fishing nets and collisions with ships pose serious threats to whales and other marine mammals.
