SKARDU, Pakistan: Officials of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Baltistan Region, have inspected the proposed site of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage and filling station in the Kwardu area of Skardu district to assess potential environmental impacts and review safety requirements.
The field visit was conducted in the presence of the project proponent and consultant. Its primary objectives were to examine the site’s geographical characteristics, assess possible environmental impacts and review the proposed safety measures for the project.
During the inspection, the EPA team briefed the project proponent on compliance with applicable environmental laws, relevant international safety standards and the legal and technical requirements for obtaining environmental approval.
Officials emphasised that projects involving LPG require stringent safety protocols because of the potential risks associated with the storage and handling of flammable gas. They stressed that protecting nearby communities, ensuring environmental compliance and meeting safety requirements would remain key priorities during the project assessment process.
The inspection formed part of the environmental review of the proposed facility. Such assessments are important for identifying potential risks, determining appropriate safeguards and ensuring that development projects meet applicable environmental and safety requirements before proceeding.
The project proponent thanked EPA officials for their guidance and assured them that all environmental and safety instructions would be followed.
The site visit highlights the role of environmental authorities in reviewing potentially high-risk infrastructure projects and promoting safeguards for communities and the surrounding environment. The inspection itself does not indicate that the project has received final environmental approval.
