PESHAWAR: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) participated in a day-long capacity-building workshop for 39 senior police officers attending the 10th Junior Command Course at the Pakistan Provincial Services Academy (PPSA), Peshawar.
The workshop brought together police officers from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and focused on Disaster Risk Management (DRM), disaster preparedness and the respective roles of the NDMA, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs).
With Khyber Pakhtunkhwa particularly vulnerable to floods and other climate-related hazards, the training also examined disaster management with a specific focus on flood risks in the province.
An NDMA representative briefed participants on contemporary disaster-management techniques and tools, as well as innovative technologies and operational practices being used to strengthen emergency preparedness and response.
The session highlighted NDMA’s increasingly proactive and anticipatory approach to disaster management, emphasizing stronger command, coordination and emergency-response capabilities before hazards escalate into disasters.
The initiative comes as Pakistan faces growing risks from extreme weather events, including floods, heavy rainfall and other climate-related hazards. Strengthening the capacity of frontline public institutions is considered essential for reducing disaster losses and improving community resilience.
NDMA said the engagement forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen disaster risk reduction and disaster management knowledge among public officials across the country.
As part of this effort, the authority is also working towards introducing a Standardized Disaster Management Toolkit for civil services academies across Pakistan. The initiative is aimed at integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk management learning into professional training programmes.
Embedding disaster preparedness within the training of police and other public officials could help improve coordination during emergencies, strengthen early response and enable institutions to better anticipate and manage climate-related risks.
The NDMA initiative reflects the growing importance of building institutional capacity alongside physical infrastructure to create a more disaster-resilient and climate-resilient Pakistan.
