SKARDU: The Wildlife Department Gilgit-Baltistan carried out a cleanliness operation in Deosai National Park on August 30, collecting waste and garbage from different areas of the park and transporting it to Skardu for proper disposal.
The initiative was aimed at maintaining the ecological health and natural beauty of one of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most important protected areas. The department said keeping the park clean is essential for protecting wildlife habitats, preserving biodiversity and maintaining the ecological balance of Deosai.
Waste accumulation in protected areas can pose risks to wildlife and degrade sensitive mountain ecosystems. The cleanliness activity therefore forms part of broader efforts to promote responsible management of Deosai National Park.
The Wildlife Department GB appreciated the cooperation of stakeholders involved in the activity and called on visitors, tourists and local communities to play their part in keeping the national park clean.
Visitors were urged to avoid littering, properly manage their waste and respect wildlife and natural habitats during their visits.
The department stressed that protecting Deosai requires collective responsibility, particularly as increasing tourism can place additional pressure on fragile mountain ecosystems.
The cleanliness campaign carries a wider message for responsible tourism: clean surroundings help protect wildlife, preserve natural landscapes and ensure that future generations can continue to experience Deosai’s unique environment.
The Wildlife Department encouraged visitors to adopt the principle of “Leave No Trace” and take all possible measures to minimise their environmental footprint while visiting protected areas.
