Benefits and risks associated with tomatoes

According to the botanical term tomato is a fruit. However, in terms of nutrition and cuisine, tomato is considered as a vegetable due to its flavor and nutritional content in foods.

Every 100 grams of tomato contains the following nutrients:

Calories: 18 percent
Fat: Less than 1 gram

Cholesterol: 0 mg

Sodium: 5 mg

Carbohydrates: 3.89 grams

Fiber: 1.20 grams

Protein: Less than 1 gram

Apart from this, it also contains vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium and folate. Research shows that tomatoes also help prevent various diseases and promote a physically active lifestyle. Following are the medical conditions that tomato helps to prevent:

However, tomatoes have risks if consumed improperly. For example, raw tomatoes may contain bacteria such as Listeria or Salmonella, which can result in illness. This is of greater concern to those who are pregnant, over 65 or under 5 years of age or have health problems.

In addition, it may pose a risk to people who take medications that temporarily suppress the immune system. This includes people with diabetes, liver or kidney disease, AIDS or cancer.
