GILGIT: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has released Rs. 972.5 million for the implementation of key development schemes in the Diamer-Basha Dam Project area as part of its ongoing Confidence Building Measures (CBMs).
The cheque was formally presented to the District Administration at a ceremony held at the office of the Commissioner, Diamer-Astore Division. The ceremony was attended by the Commissioner Diamer-Astore Division, General Manager/Project Director Diamer-Basha Dam, Chief Engineer (Construction Works), Director General Social Safeguards WAPDA, Deputy Commissioner Diamer, members of the Dam Ulema Committee and local community elders.
The funds will be utilized for development schemes aimed at improving the living standards of local communities and promoting socio-economic development in the project area.
According to WAPDA, the schemes will be implemented by the relevant departments of the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan under the supervision of the District Administration and in consultation with local communities.
Last month, WAPDA and the District Administration Diamer signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the execution of these development schemes. A joint monitoring committee comprising representatives of WAPDA, the District Administration and local communities will oversee the quality, progress and timely completion of the projects.
Under the Diamer-Basha Dam Project, WAPDA is implementing development schemes worth Rs. 78.5 billion for the welfare and socio-economic development of local communities. The schemes cover key sectors including infrastructure, education, healthcare and public welfare.
Several major projects have already been completed, including Cadet College Chilas, Army Public School Thor, and hydropower projects at Thak and Thor. Work on several other development schemes is currently underway across the project area.
WAPDA officials said continued investment in community development is aimed at strengthening public welfare, improving basic services and building greater cooperation with communities affected by the Diamer-Basha Dam Project.
